Prefer term Cannabis to….
The term I try not to use at all is ‘marijuana’. It is derogatory in nature and played a role in cannabis becoming illegal. There was a revolution in Mexico in 1910 which caused a large number of immigrants to move north to United States.
The reason for the government needing a scapegoat will be talked about another time. If interested in reading more about it to fill in the gaps that one blog post cannot cover google ‘Jack Herer’. The scapegoat being the immigrants (times haven’t changed so much).
With a residing minority already being associated with pot the mainly African American fostered jazz scene. This made the association with reefer much easier to swallow being coupled with groups already looked down upon.
She was called by her proper name ‘cannabis’ pretty exclusively until this point. In the convergence of the two words ‘marihuano’ and ‘cannabis’ out of separate texts the two terms are spoken of as different plants.
This is really fascinating to me and gives a little chuckle. In comparison one being called ‘locoweed’ while the other being medicinal and sedating. Being naive and lacking full scientific knowledge on the surface they seem similar, yet indica and sativas have much different effects.
Sativa was ‘locoweed’. Totally makes me smile for even in this day an era of super potent pot it is ‘muy locoweed en llamas’. For more details check out this great NPR article
